Alecia Nugent was recorded in Nashville in late 2000 and self-released in February 2001. Rounder signed her in September 2002 and issued the album on 9 March 2004 (Rounder 11661 0518 2). Nugent was born and raised in Hickory Grove, Louisiana, where her father, Jimmy Nugent, had formed the Southland Bluegrass Band in 1972, the year she was born, and she sang with the band from her early teens.
Carl Jackson produced the record and plays guitar and banjo on it. The rest of the band is Ronnie McCoury on mandolin, Randy Kohrs on dobro, Aubrey Haynie on fiddle and Ben Isaacs on bass, and the sessions took place at Station West in Nashville. Jackson sings harmony on several songs; Rhonda Vincent, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Larry Cordle, Jerry Salley and Sonya Isaacs sing harmony on others, and her father Jimmy and brother Roy Nugent sing on “Red, White and Blue” and “But I Do.”
The eleven songs include Lester Flatt’s “I’ll Stay Around,” which opens the record, Carter Stanley’s “Think of What You’ve Done,” Jenny Lou Carson’s “Jealous Heart,” and “Paper & Pen,” written by Jerry Salley and Allison Mellon, which Nugent named in 2004 as her most requested song.
