Alecia Nugent (Rounder 11661 0518 2, 2004) is the debut solo album from the Louisiana-born singer whose powerful alto voice and gospel-inflected delivery drew immediate attention upon her emergence on the bluegrass circuit. Nugent is joined by Aubrey Haynie on fiddle, Carl Jackson, Randy Kohrs on dobro, Rhonda Vincent, Ronnie McCoury on banjo, and Troy Parker — a lineup that reflects the high-level Nashville bluegrass community within which she was recording. The album established Nugent as a genuinely distinctive voice in contemporary bluegrass: not the high soprano associated with many female practitioners of the genre, but a lower, blues-colored voice that aligned her with the soul and gospel traditions of the Deep South as much as with the Appalachian tradition. Her Rounder debut was met with immediate critical recognition for the individuality of her vocal approach.
