All For Today cover

All for Today, released by Rebel Records on May 20, 2003, is Shawn Lane’s first solo album. Lane, the mandolinist, fiddler and tenor singer of Blue Highway, a band he helped found in 1994, had earlier worked in the bands of Ricky Skaggs and Doyle Lawson and with Larry Sparks. He produced the album, recorded at Signal Path Studio in Nashville, and plays guitar, mandolin and fiddle on it.

His Blue Highway bandmates Tim Stafford, Rob Ickes and Tom Adams appear, as do Jerry Douglas on dobro, Barry Bales and Jason Moore on bass, Jason Burleson on banjo and Ronnie Bowman and Larry Sparks as singers. Lane’s wife, Gracia Lane, sings lead on “When I See Your Face” and “Little Mountain Home.” Eight of the songs are Lane originals, among them the gospel number “Christ, the Lord,” “Beach of Death,” about postwar veterans, and “I Call Him Son,” about a man who treats his stepson as his own. The rest include “Darlin’ Nellie Across the Sea,” credited to A. P. Carter, Carl Jackson’s “Jesse and Me,” on which Bowman shares the lead with Lane, and Mark Vissage’s “Sawmill Man,” sung by Sparks with Lane on tenor.
