Almost Home (Rebel CD 1707, 1992) is a fully a-cappella gospel album — twelve unaccompanied vocal pieces rooted in the Primitive Baptist shape-note tradition Stanley grew up with in the Virginia coalfields. Jack Cooke, Junior Blankenship, Ernie Thacker, and longtime lead singer Charlie Sizemore contribute as vocalists throughout. The album draws on sessions spanning several decades: archival tracks feature the late Roy Lee Centers (Clinch Mountain Boys tenor, died 1974) and a reunion vocal with Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs from their early-1970s tenure with the band. The record stands as one of the purest expressions of Stanley's Primitive Baptist musical heritage and was an early mainstream showcase for unaccompanied bluegrass gospel harmony.
