"Aloha From Nashville," released in 1997 on Sugar Hill Records (SHCD-3864), is Darrell Scott's debut album — a self-produced record that sat in a Nashville record store bin for two years before Sugar Hill picked it up. Born in London, Kentucky and raised in a musical family, Scott had relocated to Nashville as a songwriter, and the album introduces two songs that became modern standards: "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" — later recorded definitively by Kathy Mattea and covered widely — and "It's a Great Day to Be Alive," which Travis Tritt took to number two on the country singles chart. The record established Scott as a songwriter of uncommon literary weight in Americana and roots music circles well before his name was widely known.
