Ballads and Bluegrass

Bill Harrell and the Virginians

Album · 1978 · Adelphi AD 2013

Ballads and Bluegrass (Adelphi Records AD 2013) is a studio album from Bill Harrell and an ensemble of Washington, D.C.-area performers presenting the full traditional bluegrass and country repertoire in the direct acoustic format that characterized the mid-Atlantic regional scene. Harrell plays guitar and sings; Mike Auldridge plays dobro; Carl Nelson plays mandolin; Darrell Sanders plays banjo; and Ed Ferris holds the bass. Adelphi Records, the Silver Spring, Maryland independent label, documented the bluegrass and acoustic scene centered in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia during the 1970s, and this album captures Harrell — whose partnership with Don Reno had established him as one of the region's most prominent performers — in the ensemble context that remained his most natural performing mode after the Reno & Harrell years.
