Bend in the River (County Records 771) is a studio album from the McPeak Brothers, the Virginia traditional bluegrass ensemble assembled from the McPeak family and augmented by distinguished Nashville-area acoustic instrumentalists, presenting the hard-driving traditional material that County Records documented as part of its mission to preserve regional Appalachian and mid-Atlantic bluegrass. Larry McPeak plays guitar and sings; Mike McPeak plays mandolin and sings; Dewey McPeak plays guitar; Jerry Douglas plays dobro; Jim Buchanan plays fiddle; and Rickie Simpkins plays fiddle. Douglas and Simpkins — both central figures in the Nashville acoustic world at the time of this recording — give the album an ensemble quality beyond what a purely regional recording would achieve, while the McPeak family's traditional repertoire and performing commitment anchor the material in the Appalachian tradition they grew up in.
