Beyond Description (1973-1989)

The Grateful Dead

Album · 2004

Beyond Description (1973–1989) (Rhino Records, 2004) is a twelve-disc box set from the Grateful Dead — Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and their bandmates across the sixteen-year period — presenting the complete studio albums from Wake of the Flood (1973) through Built to Last (1989). The set collects Terrapin Station, Shakedown Street, Go to Heaven, In the Dark, and the other studio records from the band's most commercially varied stretch, including the 1987 breakthrough In the Dark that produced "Touch of Grey," the band's only top-ten pop hit. The box set pairs with the earlier So Many Roads live retrospective to provide comprehensive documentation of the Grateful Dead's post-early period, tracing the evolution of one of American rock's most enduring and unconventional ensembles across sixteen years of studio recording.
