Bill Monroe Sings Bluegrass, Body and Soul, released by MCA in January 1977 (MCA 2251), is a hybrid album combining six new tracks recorded in October 1976 with four older selections from sessions between 1969 and 1972. The 1976 dates feature the Blue Grass Boys lineup of the period — Wayne Lewis on guitar, Bill Holden on banjo, Kenny Baker on fiddle, and Randy Davis on bass — with Monroe's son James adding second guitar and Joe Stuart and Blaine Sprouse contributing additional fiddle. The album reflects Monroe's settled late-career working pattern: a steady rhythm-section foundation, Baker's distinctive fiddle, and Monroe's mandolin and tenor voice working at the front. The title track became one of his late-period signatures.
