Bluegrass 1963

Reno & Smiley

Album · 2008 · Rural Rhythm RHY 1058

Bluegrass 1963 (Rural Rhythm RHY 1058) is a live recording of Don Reno and Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley and the Tennessee Cut-Ups, captured from their daily Top O' the Morning television program on WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, Virginia, on September 19, 1963, and released decades later from kinescopes by Ronnie Reno. Reno plays banjo and sings; Smiley plays guitar and sings lead; Ronnie Reno plays mandolin; Mack Magaha plays fiddle; John Palmer holds the bass; and Steve Chapman plays guitar. Carter Stanley and Ralph Stanley appear as guests, joining Reno for a twin-banjo "Home Sweet Home." The recording documents the Tennessee Cut-Ups in the informal broadcast context that captured a settled, technically commanding performance distinct from their King Records studio sessions.
