Bluegrass Country, released by Rebel Records in 1971, captures the Goins Brothers — Melvin and his brother Ray, with the addition of their younger brother Conley B. Goins on bass — at the start of their long working run as one of southern Virginia's most respected hard-bluegrass acts. The Goins Brothers had re-formed in May 1969 after Melvin's earlier tenure with the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers; Bluegrass Country was among their earliest releases together. Over the next thirty years they would cut more than thirty albums on a variety of labels, working steadily through the southern festival circuit and earning their reputation as one of the most consistent traditional bluegrass bands of their generation.
