“Windy Mountain” was recorded in 1954 by the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, the West Virginia and Kentucky band whose ranks at various times included Bobby Osborne, the Cline family, and Melvin Goins. It became one of the group’s signature numbers.
The song is a bluegrass tale of a mountain home and the longing to return to it. Windy Mountain stands for the place the singer came from and carries with him — a homesick image set to a brisk, driving tune.
The song endured well beyond the original recording; Melvin Goins later named his own band after it.
