James Roberts, son of Kentucky fiddler Doc Roberts, sang and played mandolin as half of James and Martha, the “Barn Dance Sweethearts,” with his wife Martha Carson on Atlanta radio in the 1940s. The duo made the first recording of “The Sweetest Gift, A Mother’s Smile” in 1946, backed with his own “The Man of Galilee.”
