Hylo Brown Meets the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers (Starday Records SLP 220) is a studio album from Hylo Brown and the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, pairing the Pike County, Kentucky tenor vocalist — one of bluegrass's most powerful high-voiced singers — with the Southwestern Virginia ensemble that had been one of the most active traditional acts in the region through their RCA Victor and Starday recordings. Brown plays guitar and sings lead; Ezra Cline plays guitar and sings; Ray "Curly Ray" Cline plays fiddle; Ray Goins plays guitar and sings; Melvin Goins holds the bass; and James Roberts contributes additional work. Brown's exceptional high tenor — capable of the full power of the bluegrass vocal tradition — meets the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers' hard-edge old-timey ensemble in a collaboration that draws from the shared Appalachian tradition both performers inhabited, presenting the traditional bluegrass and mountain repertoire in the most direct collective terms the style allows.
