Bluegrass Goes to College (Starday SLP 204) was released in 1962. Hylo Brown, born in Johnson County, Kentucky, had recorded for Capitol from 1954, spent time on the Martha White Mills shows with Flatt & Scruggs from 1957, and signed with Starday in 1961. This LP was cut over two days, 22 and 23 April 1962, at Starday Studios in Nashville.

Brown plays guitar and sings lead on all twelve songs; the other musicians are not documented. Most of the program is traditional material, among it “Take This Hammer,” “Sourwood Mountain,” “Roane County Prisoner,” “The Original Knoxville Girl,” “Barbara Allen” and “Handsome Molly.” “Cocaine Blues” carries a separate writer credit to T. J. Arnall.
