Bluegrass Goes to College (Starday SLP-204, 1962) is a studio album from Hylo Brown and his Timberliners, released by Nashville's Starday Records as a calculated bid for the college and folk-revival audience at the height of the early 1960s campus folk boom. Brown plays guitar and sings lead; Red Rector plays mandolin; Jim Smoak plays banjo; Clarence "Tater" Tate plays fiddle; Joe "Flapjack" Phillips holds the bass; and Rita Faye plays autoharp on selected cuts. The traditional Appalachian repertoire — "Barbara Allen," "The Knoxville Girl," "Sourwood Mountain," and similar pieces — was assembled to appeal to younger listeners encountering mountain music for the first time, and the album represents one of the more deliberate early attempts by a working bluegrass act to cross over to the urban folk audience. Brown's baritone and the Timberliners' clean ensemble playing gave Starday a credible traditional offering in a market suddenly hungry for authentic acoustic American music.
