Album · 2002 · NaxosWorld 76034-2

Bluegrass: Nashville’s Superpickers (Naxos World 76034-2, 2002) is credited to the Little Grasscals, a group of Nashville acoustic players. The Bluegrass Discography dates all 18 tracks to April 2002 and gives the place as Signal Path in Nashville. David Talbot plays banjo throughout. Mike Compton plays mandolin on all but the two banjo-and-fiddle pieces, Terry Eldredge plays guitar and sings, Jason Carter, Mike Bub and Rob Ickes appear on some tracks, and on others the fiddle is Shad Cobb, the lead guitar Booie Beach and the bass Terry Smith.

Eldredge sings lead on “Nine Pound Hammer,” “Little Maggie” and “Darlin’ Corey”; Compton leads “Gospel Plow”; Jamie Johnson leads “I Am the Man, Thomas” and “Never Grow Old”; and Mike and Lester Armistead sing “Whoa Mule Whoa,” on which Mike Armistead also plays the bones. The program also has traditional instrumentals such as “Cumberland Gap,” “Soldier’s Joy,” “Dusty Miller” and “Lonesome Reuben.” A PopMatters review noted that a handful of songs were recorded the old way, with the players standing around three microphones and stepping up to solo.
