Bobby Osborne and His Mandolin, released by CMH Records in 1981 (CMH 6256), is the Osborne family showcase in which Bobby Osborne stepped briefly out from the brother act to demonstrate his mandolin playing in a more intimate setting. Recorded at Cumberland Sound Studio in Nashville, the album frames Bobby on mandolin alongside his sons Wynn and Robby (on banjo and guitar respectively), Kenny Baker on fiddle, and Jimmy D on bass, working through a program that mixed Bobby's originals with traditional pieces like Sally Ann. Bobby was best known for the soaring tenor vocals that fronted the Osborne Brothers; this record served as a reminder that he was, beneath that voice, one of his generation's most respected mandolinists.
