Breaking Out cover

Breaking Out belongs to the wave of late Flatt and Scruggs Columbia releases bracketing the duo's 1969 dissolution — the records Columbia compiled and pushed out during a period when Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs were openly pulling in different musical directions. Columbia's pressure toward folk-revival and contemporary material was straining the partnership, and the late LPs read partly as documentary of that strain. Flatt would form the Nashville Grass that same year, taking Foggy Mountain Boys stalwarts Paul Warren, Josh Graves, and Jake Tullock with him to maintain the traditional bluegrass sound he had defended within the partnership; Scruggs would launch the Earl Scruggs Revue with his sons. Breaking Out is a late-period document of the working band in its closing months.
