Bridge over Troubled Water, released by Columbia (KCS 9914) on 26 January 1970, was Simon & Garfunkel’s fifth and final studio album, produced by Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel and Roy Halee. It was the first of their albums to credit the backing musicians in the liner notes: Fred Carter Jr. on guitars, Hal Blaine on drums, Joe Osborn on bass and Larry Knechtel on keyboards, alongside Simon.
Part of the album was cut in Nashville. “The Boxer,” released as a single in March 1969 and later placed on the album, was recorded in part at Columbia’s Nashville studio in December 1968; Fred Carter Jr. played guitar there, Charlie McCoy played harmonica, and Pete Drake played pedal steel guitar and Dobro. Other parts of the track were recorded at St. Paul’s Chapel at Columbia University and in New York.
The album won six Grammy Awards at the 1971 ceremony, including Album of the Year, and has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide.
