Cardinal Soul (CMH 6235, circa 1981) is a recording from the Bluegrass Cardinals, the Southern California traditional bluegrass band founded in the early 1970s by banjoist Don Parmley. David Parmley, Don's son, handles vocals and guitar alongside David Ratcliff and Ernie Sykes, with Bobby Hicks — the celebrated fiddle player long associated with Bill Monroe and Ricky Skaggs — contributing to the session. CMH Records was among the most active bluegrass labels of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and the Cardinals were among its most consistent recording acts. The band's California base made them an anomaly in a genre whose center of gravity was firmly Appalachian and Nashville, but their sound was rigorously traditional and their vocal quality among the finest on the West Coast bluegrass circuit of that era.
