The Bluegrass Cardinals were one of the most influential bands of the 1970s and 80s — a California-born, Virginia-based trio-plus-sidemen centered on banjoist Don Parmley and his son, lead vocalist/guitarist David Parmley. The “Cardinal sound” of intricate three-part vocal harmony and polished musicianship set a new standard for professionalism in bluegrass and served as a springboard for Larry Stephenson, Norman Wright, Bill Bryson, Dennis Fetchet, Dale Perry, and many others.

- Founded in Los Angeles in 1974 by banjoist Don Parmley (1933–2016, born Monticello, Kentucky) with mandolinist Randy Graham and Parmley's 15-year-old son David Parmley (guitar, lead vocals).
- Don Parmley had previously played with the Hillmen (with Chris Hillman, Vern Gosdin, and Rex Gosdin) and as the banjoist on The Beverly Hillbillies TV show — he played all the banjo work on the series except the Flatt & Scruggs theme.
- Self-titled debut on Sierra Briar Records (SBR-4205, 1976) prompted the Parmley family's move from Southern California to Virginia, where they settled and became a top festival draw.
- Welcome to Virginia (Rounder, 1977) followed. Credited as the first bluegrass band to record a cappella bluegrass gospel (per manager Lance Leroy).
- Multiple CMH Records albums followed in the late 1970s and early 1980s before a three-album stretch on Sugar Hill Records (1983–1986).
- Career lineups included fiddler Dennis Fetchet, bassist Bill Bryson (later the Desert Rose Band), mandolinist Larry Stephenson, Norman Wright, John Davis, Mike Hartgrove (fiddle), and Dale Perry (bass).
- Appeared on the Grand Ole Opry multiple times during their peak years. On Stage in Nashville captured a live weekend recording at the Station Inn with Glen Duncan as guest fiddle.
- Signature songs include “Mountain Laurel,” “Cardinal Soul,” “Sunny Side of the Mountain,” “Rollin' Away,” and “I Wonder Where You Are Tonight.”
- David Parmley left the band in 1991 to pursue a Nashville country career, then formed David Parmley, Scott Vestal and Continental Divide in 1994 (IBMA Emerging Artist 1995). The Bluegrass Cardinals continued briefly with a new lineup before Don Parmley's retirement.
- Band dissolved in 1997 when Don Parmley retired. Don passed away on July 30, 2016 from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
- Inducted into the IBMA Hall of Fame in 2025 as founding members David and Don Parmley.
- David Parmley's 2025 tribute album Cardinal Tradition (Now and Then) (615 Hideaway) revisits the Cardinals' catalog with former bandmates Larry Stephenson and Don Rigsby alongside Del McCoury.
