Tennessee Mountain Bluegrass Festival (CMH CMH 9014) is a live or studio compilation from the Bluegrass Cardinals, the Southern California-based traditional bluegrass ensemble led by Don Parmley and his son David Parmley, recorded in the context of the Tennessee festival circuit that brought West Coast acts into direct contact with the Appalachian and upper-South audiences who had sustained the music since its commercial origins. Don Parmley plays banjo; David Parmley plays guitar and sings lead; John Davis plays mandolin; Warren Blair plays fiddle; and Randy Graham holds the bass. The Bluegrass Cardinals' commitment to the traditional Kentucky bluegrass sound — despite their California origins — made them one of the most credible West Coast acts in the festival circuit during the 1970s and 1980s, and CMH Records documented their performance in the live context that suited their ensemble energy.
