Album · 1978 · CMH 9014

The Tennessee Mountain Bluegrass Festival (CMH 9014) is a double LP issued in 1978 by CMH Records, recorded live from the stage of a bluegrass festival near Kingsport, Tennessee, in August 1978. It is a various-artists set. Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass open it, taking the first side and the start of the second; fiddler Chubby Wise, Harold Morrison & Smoking Bluegrass and the Rose Brothers & Stoney Creek Grass follow, then comes a side for the Bluegrass Cardinals, and a fourth side with harmonica player Charlie McCoy and Buddy Spicher & the Nashville Superpickers.

The Flatt tracks list Lester Flatt on guitar and lead vocals with Clarence “Tater” Tate on fiddle, Marty Stuart on mandolin, J. R. “Curly” Seckler on rhythm guitar, Jarvis “Pete” Corum on bass, Charles Nixon on dobro and Blake Williams on banjo. Stuart sings harmony on Flatt’s “The Bluebirds Are Singing for Me.”

The Bluegrass Cardinals, a Los Angeles band founded by banjoist Don Parmley in 1974, appear here with David Parmley on guitar, Randy Graham on mandolin, Don Parmley on banjo, John Davis on bass and Warren Blair on fiddle. John Davis sings lead on “I’m Just a Used to Be to You,” and Graham takes the lead on “Darlin’ Corey” and “That’s the Way I Want to Go.”
