Sunday Mornin' Singin', released on CMH in 1980, is a gospel collection from the Bluegrass Cardinals, the band Don Parmley founded that became one of the most respected traditional groups to emerge from the West Coast before relocating east. The album draws on the deep vein of sacred material that runs through bluegrass — the shape-note hymnody and church singing that Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, and their peers carried into the music from the start. The Cardinals were known for the strength of their vocal blend, built around Don Parmley's banjo and the lead and harmony singing of his son David Parmley, and gospel quartet material suited them especially well. Sunday Mornin' Singin' presents that blend in its natural setting — an unhurried set of devotional songs delivered with conviction and the close, blended harmony that was the band's calling card.
