Sunday Mornin’ Singin’ is an album of gospel songs by the Bluegrass Cardinals, released by CMH in 1980 (CMH 6247). The band was formed in Los Angeles in 1974 by banjo player Don Parmley and his fifteen-year-old son David, and it had moved to Virginia by the mid-1970s. All eleven tracks were recorded on 31 March 1980 at Hilltop Recording Studios in Nashville; Lance Leroy produced and Kevin McManus engineered.
The lineup on the session was David Parmley on guitar, Don Parmley on banjo, Norman Wright on mandolin, Tim Smith on fiddle and Ernie Sykes on bass; Wright, the two Parmleys and Sykes share the vocals. The songs have different lead singers: Wright leads the Bill Monroe song “Shine Hallelujah Shine,” “Angels Rock Me to Sleep” and “Just a Little Talk with Jesus,” David Parmley leads “Sunday Mornin’ Singin’” and “Carpenter of Wood,” and Don Parmley leads “Crossing of Jordan.” Wright wrote the title song, and M. Christian is credited with four of the others, including “Angels Rock Me to Sleep” and “Just a Little Talk with Jesus.”
The group, which disbanded in 1997, was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2025.
