The Bluegrass Cardinals cover

The Bluegrass Cardinals (Briar BR 4205, 1976) was the first album by the band that Don Parmley started in California in 1974 with his teenage son David, Randy Graham and Bill Bryson. Parmley, a Kentucky-born banjoist, had supplied the banjo soundtrack for The Beverly Hillbillies from 1964 to 1973. It was recorded in October 1975 at Westlake Audio in Los Angeles, with John Delgatto producing. Don Parmley plays banjo, David Parmley guitar, Randy Graham mandolin, Dennis Fetchet fiddle and Bill Bryson bass. Steve Stevenson sings bass on “There Is a Fountain.”

Bryson wrote “Girl at the Crossroads Bar,” which Larry Sparks later picked up. The album also has the Louvin Brothers’ “Are You Missing Me,” Mosie Lister’s “Where No One Stands Alone” and “Rollin’ On,” credited to Bill and Charlie Monroe. Toward the end of 1976 the band moved to Virginia; its second album, Welcome to Virginia, came out on Rounder in 1977, and its albums for CMH began with Livin’ in the Good Old Days in 1978.
