Doyle Lawson and Paul Williams

Album · 2017 · Mountain Home MH 16722

Chapter 3 (Mountain Home MH 16722) was released on 31 March 2017 by Doyle Lawson and Paul Williams, who had made two earlier albums with J.D. Crowe: Old Friends Get Together (2010) and Standing Tall and Tough (2014). Lawson and Williams both played in Jimmy Martin’s Sunny Mountain Boys.

Lawson plays guitar and sings lead; Williams plays mandolin and sings lead and tenor. Josh Swift plays resonator guitar and percussion and sings baritone, Stephen Burwell plays fiddle, and Joe Mullins (banjo), Tim Surrett (bass) and, on some tracks, David Johnson (pedal steel guitar) are credited as guest musicians. The album was recorded at Crossroads Studio in Arden, North Carolina, with Van Atkins as recording engineer and Lawson as producer.

The twelve songs are drawn largely from country repertoire, among them Dolly Parton’s “Till Death Do Us Part,” Buddy Starcher’s “I’ll Still Write Your Name in the Sand,” James O’Gwynn’s “Talk to Me Old Lonesome Heart,” Alton Delmore’s “I’m Sorry I Caused You to Cry,” Justin Tubb’s “Big Fool of the Year” and the Louvin Brothers’ “I Feel Better Now.”
