Cimarron was released by Warner Bros. in November 1981 (BSK 3603). Brian Ahern produced and arranged it, working in the Enactron Truck and at Magnolia Sound Studios in North Hollywood; “If I Needed You,” Townes Van Zandt’s song, was co-produced with Don Williams and Garth Fundis, and Williams sings the duet vocal.
The credits show different groups of players from track to track. Ricky Skaggs plays banjo on “Another Lonesome Morning,” where James Burton is on electric guitar and Hank DeVito on pedal steel, and fiddle on Sonny Throckmorton’s “The Last Cheater’s Waltz” and on “Tennessee Rose,” singing harmony with Sharon White on both. Herb Pedersen plays banjo and sings harmony on Rusty Young’s “Rose of Cimarron,” and Frank Reckard plays lead guitar on it and on “Tennessee Rose.” “Tennessee Waltz,” by Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart, has Wayne Goodwin on fiddle and Glen Hardin on piano. The album is dedicated to John Ware, who plays drums on most of it.
Three singles reached the country top ten: “If I Needed You” and “Born to Run” both peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’s country chart, and “Tennessee Rose” at No. 9. The album reached No. 6 on Billboard’s country albums chart and No. 46 on the Billboard 200.
