Cimarron, released in 1981 on Warner Bros. (BSK 3603), is Emmylou Harris's seventh studio album, assembled largely from session outtakes by producer Brian Ahern (with Don Williams and Garth Fundis producing individual tracks). The supporting cast leans country-rock: James Burton on electric guitar, Hank DeVito on pedal steel, Frank Reckard on lead guitar, with bluegrass-adjacent contributions from Ricky Skaggs on banjo and fiddle and harmonies from Skaggs, Sharon White, and Herb Pedersen. The record yielded three top-ten country singles including the Don Williams duet "If I Needed You." Cimarron sits outside bluegrass proper but threads through the Harris catalog as the moment Skaggs's bluegrass instrumentation kept full footing in her sound alongside the country-rock band.
