City of Refuge

Abigail Washburn

Album · 2011 · Rounder Records

City of Refuge was released by Rounder Records on 11 January 2011. Abigail Washburn made it with the Portland producer Tucker Martine and the Nashville songwriter Kai Welch, who co-wrote about half of its songs. The guests include guitarist Bill Frisell, the guzheng player Wu Fei, Chris Funk of the Decemberists, Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket, Jeremy Kittel of the Turtle Island String Quartet, and Rayna Gellert, her former bandmate in Uncle Earl.

Washburn had by then also recorded with the Sparrow Quartet, the group she founded with Béla Fleck, and City of Refuge was reviewed as a wider-ranging record than either. The eleven tracks run from the title song and “Bring Me My Queen” through “Chains” and “Burn Thru” to “Bright Morning Stars,” which closes the album.
