Come on Down to My World, released in 1999 on Rounder (C 0422), is J.D. Crowe's first studio album as a New South bandleader in nearly a decade, recorded September 1998 at Hilltop Recording Studios in Nashville with Crowe producing. The lineup pairs Crowe on banjo with Greg Luck on guitar and vocals, Dwight McCall on mandolin and vocals, Rickey Wasson on guitar, Phil Leadbetter on Dobro, and Curt Chapman on bass, with Glen Duncan and Buddy Spicher trading fiddle. The eclectic repertoire reaches across traditional bluegrass, Merle Haggard, Charley Pride, and a standout reading of Townes Van Zandt's "White Freightliner Blues." The record marked Crowe's return from the early-1990s hiatus and reintroduced the New South brand to a new generation of fans.
