Greg Luck

As a young player in North Carolina he jammed at local festivals and shows with two other future professionals, the banjo player Steve Dilling and the mandolinist Wayne Benson. His band work moved from instrument to instrument: he played banjo with Lost & Found and guitar with Lynn Morris, and with the Bluegrass Cardinals he played guitar and fiddle and sang on My Kinda Grass (1994), recorded with Don Parmley on banjo and Herschel Sizemore on mandolin.

In 1998 he played guitar and sang baritone on Don Rigsby’s Sugar Hill album A Vision, with J.D. Crowe on banjo on one track. He then joined Crowe’s New South as a guitarist and lead singer, and on Come On Down to My World (Rounder, 1999), recorded at Hilltop Recording Studios in Nashville with Crowe, Rickey Wasson, Dwight McCall, Phil Leadbetter and Curt Chapman, he sang lead on songs including “White Freightliner Blues” and “Back to the Barrooms.” With IIIrd Tyme Out he played fiddle on The Best Durn Ride (Chateau, 2004), alongside Russell Moore, Steve Dilling, Wayne Benson and Ray Deaton. He also worked with Sideline.

He has continued as a session player in North Carolina: on guitar and mandolin for Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road’s Carolina Hurricane (Rural Rhythm, 2010), as a lead singer on Jason Davis’s Second Time Around (Mountain Fever, 2013), on fiddle for Nu-Blu’s Shine (2014), for Wildfire’s 2014 single “I Want to Go Back Home Again,” and for Frank Poindexter’s It’s the Music with the Rice Brothers. He and the fiddler Courtney Luck, whom he married in 2018, played guitar and fiddle together in Grasstowne. As a songwriter he has written for Mountain Heart and IIIrd Tyme Out; “The Healing Kind,” written with Ronnie Bowman, was recorded by Dan Seals and by Lee Ann Womack on I Hope You Dance (2000). He is also a recording engineer and runs his own studio as head of the Riverside Music Company.
