Second Time Around is the second solo album by the Virginia banjo player Jason Davis, released by Mountain Fever Records in July 2013 (MFR130625), when he was 23. At the time he was the banjo player in Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice. Earlier he had played with Michelle Nixon & Drive, Blue Ridge, Kenny & Amanda Smith and Grasstowne, and his first solo album, Steppin’ Out, came out on Pinecastle in 2007.
Davis built the record around singers, choosing the songs and a different vocalist for most of them. Darrell Webb sings Bob Amos’s “Where the Wild River Rolls,” first recorded by Hot Rize. Greg Luck sings “Darby’s Castle” with Dwight McCall on harmony. Junior Sisk takes the Carter Family’s “Just Another Broken Heart,” and Shawn Lane and Steve Gulley sing “Bootleg John.” Dustin Pyrtle sings “Oh Death,” in an arrangement devised by the McKinnon brothers with low-tuned banjo, Ron Stewart’s fiddle and Josh Swift’s resonator guitar. Justin Tomlin sings Hugh Prestwood’s “Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart,” a 1990 hit for Randy Travis.
The core band is Davis with Keith McKinnon on guitar, Kevin McKinnon on mandolin and Kameron Keller on bass, with Stewart or Justen Haynes on fiddle. Four tracks are banjo instrumentals: “Bully of the Town,” which Davis had cut earlier for a Huber Banjos CD; Aaron Ramsey’s new “Ted’s Tune”; “Liberty” as a banjo-and-fiddle duet with Stewart; and “Shamrock,” with Ramsey on mandolin. The album was recorded at Mountain Fever Studios.
