"Same Old Me," released in 2003 on Running Dog Records, is Donna Hughes's second album — 21 tracks, every one written by the North Carolina singer-songwriter herself. The supporting cast includes Gena Britt, Greg Luck, Kevin Richardson, and Zachary McLamb in a contemporary acoustic bluegrass setting. The album's original songwriting caught the attention of Union Station bassist Barry Bales, who heard a track on North Carolina public radio station WNCW and brought Hughes to Alison Krauss's attention; Krauss became a champion of her songwriting. Tony Rice, similarly impressed, offered to produce her next recording. "Same Old Me" is the foundational document of a career built almost entirely on original material — an unusual distinction in a genre where covered songs remain central to most recordings.
