Comin’ Home to Stay is Ricky Skaggs’s ninth studio album. Epic released it on March 28, 1988 (LP FE 40623), after sessions in 1987 at Treasure Isle Recorders in Nashville. Skaggs produced it, Ed Seay engineered and mixed it, and it peaked at number 12 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. “Thanks Again,” written by Jim Rushing, was released as a single in June 1988, and Kentucky Thunder followed in 1989.
None of the ten songs is a Skaggs original. “Hold Whatcha Got” is by Jimmy Martin; on this track Skaggs sings lead and harmony and plays electric guitar, with J. D. Crowe on banjo, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Bobby Hicks on fiddle, Mike Rojas on piano, Jesse Chambers on bass and Mike Kennedy on drums. Elsewhere the album includes Bob Wills’s “San Antonio Rose,” Webb Pierce and Mel Tillis’s “I’m Tired,” and “Lord, She Sure Is Good at Lovin’ Me,” written by Paul Overstreet and Randy Travis. Sharon White-Skaggs sings lead on “Home Is Wherever You Are,” and the Whites sing harmony on “If You Don’t Believe the Bible.”
