Couchville Sessions, released on 13 May 2016 on Full Light Records, collects recordings Darrell Scott made in 2001 and 2002 in his living room on Couchville Pike. The core band was Danny Thompson on upright bass, Kenny Malone on drums and percussion, and Dan Dugmore on pedal and lap steel, and the performances were mostly recorded live. Scott sings and plays guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, vibes and Weissenborn slide guitar. The tapes sat until the spring of 2015, when he went back to them and brought in Bill Payne to overdub piano and organ.

By then the cast had grown. Richard Bennett added guitar, Dirk Powell accordion, banjo and fiddle, Shad Cobb fiddle, and Mike McGoldrick uilleann pipes and whistle. Peter Rowan and John Cowan sing on “Midnight Moonlight,” Rowan’s own song, and Guy Clark delivers a spoken monologue on the coda of the opening track, “Down to the River.”

Of the fourteen songs, nine are Scott’s, one of them written with Tim O’Brien. The five covers are Johnny Cash’s “Big River,” Hank Williams’s “Ramblin’ Man,” Rowan’s “Midnight Moonlight,” Townes Van Zandt’s “Loretta” and James Taylor’s “Another Grey Morning.”
