Dad's Favorites (Rounder Records 0100, 1977) is a studio album led by Oklahoma fiddler Byron Berline, bringing together a rotating cast of California and Nashville acoustic musicians around a program of fiddle tunes and breakdowns that honored the Oklahoma fiddle tradition in which Berline was raised. Berline plays fiddle throughout; Dan Crary plays guitar; Vince Gill contributes rhythm guitar in an early career appearance; Doug Dillard, John Hartford, and John Hickman each play banjo on different tracks; Skip Conover plays dobro; and Bill Plummer handles bass. The album documents the collaborative, improvisational spirit of California's thriving acoustic music scene in the late 1970s and demonstrates the interchangeable ensemble playing that characterized the Berline-Crary-Hickman extended circle. The title acknowledges the fiddle music that Berline's father had played in the Oklahoma contest and dance tradition.
