David Peterson & 1946 cover

David Peterson & 1946 is the band’s self-released debut CD, issued in 2001. The name points to 1946, the year Bill Monroe brought together the lineup of Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Chubby Wise and Howard “Cedric Rainwater” Watts, which has come to be considered the first true bluegrass band. A Country Standard Time reviewer heard the group as followers of that era rather than of Monroe alone, and the band is known for performing in period dress around a single microphone.

David Peterson sings lead and plays guitar, with Charlie Derrington on mandolin and tenor vocals, Steve Huber on banjo and baritone and bass vocals, Andy Todd on bass and lead and baritone vocals, and Richard Kriehn on fiddle. Aubrey Haynie and Stuart Duncan are listed as additional fiddlers on two tracks, “My Darling’s Last Goodbye” and “I’ll Claim the Blame.” The CD has fifteen tracks, the last a bonus track. The reviewer noted songs from the Monroe, Flatt and Stanley repertoire, such as “My Darling’s Last Goodbye” and “The Old Home,” alongside Paul Craft’s “I’ll Claim the Blame” and Monroe’s gospel song “I’m Travelin’ On and On.” Other titles include “In Foggy Old London,” “Blue Yodel No. 3” and “The Butcher Boy.”
