Dawn of the Stoneman's Age (RCA Victor LSP 4264, 1970) is the first RCA Victor album from the Stoneman Family, produced by Jack Clement following the death of patriarch Ernest "Pop" Stoneman in 1968. Donna Stoneman plays mandolin and sings; Jimmy Stoneman holds the bass and sings; Patsy Stoneman plays autoharp and sings; Roni Stoneman plays banjo and sings; and Scotty Stoneman plays fiddle and sings. Clement's production placed contemporary material — Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising," Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee," Townes Van Zandt's "Tecumseh Valley" — alongside traditional bluegrass instrumentals, aiming to broaden the family's commercial reach. The approach drew criticism from purists but reflected the ensemble's instinct to remain a living act rather than a preservation project in the years after Pop's death.
