Day By Day

Norman Blake

Album · 2021 · Smithsonian Folkways ?

Day by Day was released by Smithsonian Folkways on 22 October 2021, when Norman Blake was 83. The nine tracks were recorded in single takes in one afternoon. Blake plays guitar and banjo; his wife Nancy Blake plays cello, and members of the Rising Fawn String Ensemble join him: fiddler James Bryan, vocalist David Hammonds, and Joel McCormick on guitar and vocals.

Two of the pieces are Blake’s own, the song “Time” and the instrumental “Old Joe’s March.” The others are “When the Roses Bloom,” “Just Tell Them That You Saw Me,” “I’m Free Again,” “Montcalm and Wolfe,” “Three Leaves of Shamrock,” “The Dying Cowboy” and, as the closing track, “My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains.” Blake had played on Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline, on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Will the Circle Be Unbroken and later on Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’s Raising Sand, and had worked with Johnny Cash.
