Deep in the Mountains (Rounder 11661-0578-2, 2008) is Longview’s fourth album and the first to feature J.D. Crowe on banjo, Lou Reid on guitar and Ron Stewart on fiddle. They replaced Joe Mullins, Glen Duncan and Dudley Connell from the group’s earlier albums, while Don Rigsby (mandolin), Marshall Wilborn (bass) and singer James King, who had been with the band since its first record, stayed on. The band produced the album itself. One song, “Eating Out of Your Hand,” was recorded at Eastwood Studio in Cana, Virginia; the rest were cut at Skaggs Place Studios in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
The lead singing is divided among King, Reid and Rigsby, with Wilborn, Stewart and Crowe singing harmony parts. King leads “Don’t Leave Me Alone,” “Baptism of Jesse Taylor,” “I Love You Yet” and “Georgia Bound”; Reid leads Jim and Jesse McReynolds’ “I’ll Love Nobody But You” and the Louvin Brothers’ “I’m Gonna Love You One More Time.” “Weathered Grey Stone,” written by Dudley Connell, who sang on the group’s earlier albums, is sung in turn by King, Rigsby and Reid. “Cotton Eyed Joe,” arranged by Stewart, is the only instrumental of the twelve tracks.
