Deep Water was Amanda Cook’s first album for Mountain Fever Records, released on 3 November 2017 (MFR 171103). It was her second album overall. The first, One Stop Along the Road (2014), came out without a label. Cook, who is from Florida, made the record at Mountain Fever Studio in Willis, Virginia, with Aaron Ramsey producing, mixing and playing mandolin. The same band plays on all twelve tracks: Scotty French on guitar, Carolyne VanLierop on banjo, George Mason on fiddle and Jeff Partin on bass and dobro. VanLierop and French sing harmony throughout, and Partin adds a third harmony voice on “Magnolia Wind.”

Most of the songs are by contemporary writers. Thomm Jutz wrote the opener, “Midnight 402,” and the closer, “Leaving Louisville.” Ronnie Bowman wrote “Til I’m Too Old,” and “Caleb Meyer” is by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Guy Clark and Shawn Camp wrote “Magnolia Wind,” Jerry Salley and Scott Southworth “Liar’s Moon,” and Mindy Smith “Come to Jesus.” VanLierop contributed “Banks of Big Bend” and “Big River” and wrote the title song with Cook. The set also includes Jimmy C. Newman’s “Cry Cry Darlin’.” Salley also wrote the liner notes, and Mark Hodges was executive producer. Bluegrass Unlimited reviewed the album in March 2018.
