Detroit to Wheeling documents the Osborne Brothers at a moment of commercial maturity, capturing a band that had spent two decades navigating the difficult territory between bluegrass tradition and country music's mainstream. Bobby and Sonny Osborne came out of Kentucky and honed their sound in Detroit before relocating to Nashville. They were innovative in their use of electric instruments and background vocals, moves that alienated some traditionalists but extended their reach considerably. Bobby's high lonesome lead tenor became one of the most recognizable voices in the music, and Sonny's banjo playing combined Scruggs-style mechanics with a harmonic sophistication all his own.
