Detroit to Wheeling is a two-CD set released by Pinecastle in 2003 (PRC 1124). Bobby Osborne on mandolin and Sonny Osborne on banjo recorded most of it at Hilltop Studio in Nashville between November 1998 and February 2002, with a different supporting band at each stage. The November 1998 sessions have Terry Eldredge on guitar, Glen Duncan on fiddle, Gene Wooten on Dobro and Terry Smith on bass. In June 2001 the band was Dana Cupp and Charlie Cushman on guitars, Shad Cobb on fiddle, Wooten and Smith. By February 2002 it was Cupp on guitar, Robert Bowlin and David Crow on fiddles, Tim Graves on Dobro and Daryl Mosley on bass. Two tracks, “Rock of Ages” and “Pretty Little Indian,” come from Studio 2000 in Nashville in 1995 and 1996.

The songs include Charlie Monroe’s “I’m Old Kentucky Bound,” A. P. Carter’s “Lover’s Farewell,” the Louvin Brothers’ “Love and Wealth,” Hank Williams and Fred Rose’s “Mansion on the Hill,” Bill Monroe and Kenny Baker’s “Big Sandy River,” and Sonny Osborne’s own “Shady Lane.” Bobby Osborne wrote “Tahoe.”

The second disc ends with older material. Several tracks, among them “The Hills of Roan County” and “Highway of Sorrow,” come from 1957 radio recordings at WWVA in Wheeling, West Virginia, where the brothers had joined the Jamboree in 1956. On most of them the lineup was Red Allen on guitar, Johnny Dacus on fiddle, Ricky Russell on Dobro and Ray Anderson on bass. The last track, “We’ll Meet Again Sweetheart,” was recorded on 21 June 1961 at Watermelon Park in Berryville, Virginia, with Lester Flatt on guitar and vocal, Paul Warren on fiddle, Josh Graves on Dobro and Jake Tullock on bass.
