Do You Remember was issued by Rebel Records in 1985 as an LP, catalog number REB 1640. Bill Harrell, who sang lead and played guitar, had been a Washington, D.C.–area bluegrass musician since the middle 1950s, with stints in Buzz Busby’s band and with Reno & Smiley, and had been Don Reno’s partner for about a decade before that partnership ended in early 1977. He then re-formed the Virginians with bassist Ed Ferris, fiddler Carl Nelson and banjo player Darrell Sanders.
That core of Harrell, Sanders, Nelson and Ferris is joined on the album by Eddie King on mandolin. King, Nelson and Sanders sing the harmony parts, and King takes the lead vocal on one track, Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” while Sanders plays banjo and resonator guitar. The twelve tracks were cut at Bias Recording in Springfield, Virginia, in sessions on 21 April 1984, 2 December 1984 and 6 January 1985; “Ring of Fire” was recorded separately, on 28 June 1984, at Vassar Recording in Nashville.
Harrell wrote or co-wrote about half the material, including the title song, “The Story of Virgil Carter,” “On Whiskey Mountain” and “Reflections of Virginia,” and shares credit with George Shuffler on “For the Bible Tells Me So.” The rest are traditional pieces such as “Alabama Bound,” “Come Back Little Pal” and “Let the Savior In,” and songs by other writers, among them “They’ll Never Take Her Love from Me” and “Are There Tears Behind Your Smile?”
