Doc and Dawg, released on Acoustic Disc in 1997, documents the long musical friendship between Doc Watson and David Grisman, drawing on sessions the two recorded between 1987 and 1991. Watson, the North Carolina flatpicker and singer whose guitar work helped redefine the instrument's place in American music, and Grisman, the mandolinist whose 'dawg music' fused bluegrass with jazz and beyond, had been natural allies since the 1970s — both steeped in the pre-war acoustic tradition, both technically formidable, both convinced that vernacular American music rewarded serious attention. The album moves through traditional songs, fiddle tunes, and gospel material in the relaxed, conversational manner of two masters playing for the pleasure of it. Released on Grisman's own label, it preserves an unhurried meeting of friends whose rapport needed no rehearsing — a record as warm and direct as the partnership behind it.
