Don Reno and the Tennessee Cutups (Sardis Records 5012) is a studio album from Don Reno, the Duncan, South Carolina banjoist and vocalist who became one of the most technically innovative performers in bluegrass history, presented here with a family-centered ensemble that includes his sons Ronnie and Jean Reno alongside additional sidemen from the Roanoke-area performing community. Reno plays banjo and sings; Ronnie Reno plays mandolin and sings; Jean Reno sings; Chuck Haney contributes instrumental work; Duck Austin plays additional instruments; and Ray Crisp holds the bass. The family configuration reflects the Reno ensemble's characteristic later structure, with Don's children taking on performing responsibilities that would sustain the Tennessee Cutups name beyond the classic Reno & Smiley years and into the subsequent decades of the family's independent recording career.
