Don’t Stop the Music

The Del McCoury Band

Album · 1988 · Rounder 0245

Don't Stop the Music, released by Rounder Records in 1988, is one of Del McCoury's last solo-credited records before the official rebranding as the Del McCoury Band — the configuration anchored by his sons Ronnie on mandolin (a member since 1981) and, soon, Rob on banjo. McCoury had spent the 1980s building one of the most disciplined working bands in bluegrass after a long apprenticeship that had begun with Bill Monroe in 1963; this album captures the working unit at the threshold of the run that would make it the bluegrass act of the 1990s. The program leans into the high-lonesome lead voice and tight ensemble work that would become the McCoury family signature.
