Down Home cover

Down Home is Josh Williams’s third solo album, following Now That You’re Gone (2001) and Lonesome Highway (2004). It was first released in 2009 by Pinecastle Records (PRC 1173); when Pinecastle closed in early 2010, Williams took it to Rounder, which issued it in 2011 (Rounder 11661-0661-2) with the same songs in the same order. Williams had played mandolin with the Special Consensus and guitar with Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, and recording started while he was still in Vincent’s band.

The twelve tracks were recorded at Top Dog Studios and mixed at Burns Station Sound in Burns, Tennessee. Williams sings lead on all but the one instrumental, Tommy Jackson’s “Cherokee Shuffle,” and is credited on guitar, mandolin and banjo. Rhonda Vincent sings harmony on “Lonesome Feeling,” “Kodak 1955” and “Polka on the Banjo,” and Tina Adair on the title song, written by Carl Jackson and Sylvia Rutledge. Tony Rice plays guitar and sings on the Delmore Brothers’ “Blue Railroad Train.” The band includes Randy Kohrs on guitar, Greg Cahill and Aaron McDaris on banjo, Jason Carter and Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Doug Jernigan on pedal steel, and Mickey Harris and Tim Dishman on bass. Other songs include Homer Joy’s “Streets of Bakersfield,” Dixie and Tom T. Hall’s “We’ll Burn That Bridge” and Jimmy Martin’s “The Last Song.”
