Down South cover

Down South, a posthumous release from Doc and Merle Watson issued in 2007, gathers recordings that showcase the duo's particular gift for southern roots material spanning old-time, blues, country, and gospel. Doc Watson spent his career demonstrating that these genre boundaries were largely artificial constructs imposed on a tradition that had always flowed freely between church, field, and dance hall. Merle Watson, who accompanied his father from the late 1960s until his death in 1985, developed into an accomplished slide guitarist and second voice whose contributions gave the duo its characteristic warmth. The album joins a body of posthumous releases that have kept Doc Watson's catalog in circulation for younger generations of acoustic guitarists.
