Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver

Album · 1979 · Sugar Hill SH 3708

Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the band's self-titled 1979 debut on the new Sugar Hill label, introduced the lineup that would shape bluegrass-gospel and progressive harmony singing for the next decade — Lawson on mandolin with Jimmy Haley on guitar and lead, Lou Reid on bass and harmony, and Terry Baucom on banjo and bass vocals. Lawson had been part of the great Country Gentlemen lineup that included Skaggs and Douglas; on striking out for his own band that spring, he found the name Quicksilver on his mother's suggestion after a conflict over Foxfire. The debut combined melodic instrumental work with the sweet southern-gospel harmonies that would define the band, and immediately drew critical attention.
