Early Dawg: Deluxe Edition (Acoustic Disc, 2022) is an expanded reissue of David Grisman's 1980 Sugar Hill Records album Early Dawg, supplemented with thirteen previously unreleased recordings from 1963 to 1973 to create a twenty-nine-track retrospective of his early acoustic work. Grisman plays mandolin throughout; Del McCoury plays guitar and sings; Jerry McCoury holds the string bass; and Winnie Winston and Bill Keith each play banjo across different sessions. The deluxe edition adds Grisman's first recorded mandolin performance — from the Even Dozen Jug Band's 1964 Elektra album — and early versions of compositions including "Cedar Hill," "Fanny Hill," and "Opus 57," providing a comprehensive portrait of his formation in the years before he developed the Dawg style that redefined the instrument's role in acoustic music.
