Earthwords & Music (RCA Victor LSP 3796) is John Hartford’s second album, released in July 1967. It was recorded at RCA Victor Studios in Nashville and produced by Felton Jarvis, with Jim Malloy as recording engineer; Hartford wrote all twelve songs and the liner notes. It follows John Hartford Looks at Life (1966).

The album includes “Gentle on My Mind,” which Hartford said he wrote in 1966 after seeing Doctor Zhivago. His own recording was released as a single in May 1967, with “(Good Old Electric) Washing Machine” on the other side, and reached number 60 on Billboard’s country chart. Glen Campbell heard it on the radio and recorded his own version in June 1967. At the 1968 Grammy Awards Hartford won Best Folk Performance for the song, and Campbell won for his version.

Other tracks include “Love Song in 2/4 Time,” “Naked in Spite of Myself,” “Left Handed Woman” and “Baking Soda.” The album was reissued in 2002 on a single CD with Looks at Life.
