Earthwords and Music, John Hartford's second album for RCA Victor (LSP-3796), was released in 1967 with producer Jarvis Felton at the helm. The record contains Gentle on My Mind, the song Glen Campbell would soon turn into one of the biggest country crossover hits of the era — and which earned Hartford his songwriting Grammy that same year. The rest of the program ranges from Hartford's eccentric early songwriting (Naked in Spite of Myself, Baking Soda — a home-economics lecture with banjo accompaniment) through more conventional material reshaped by his characteristically wry sensibility. RCA reissued the album in 2002 alongside his debut Looks at Life on a single CD; Earthwords stands as Hartford's pre-Aereo-Plain moment of widest commercial visibility.
