Evangeline

Emmylou Harris

Album · 1981 · Warner Bros. Records BSK 3508

Evangeline was released on Warner Bros. (BSK 3508) in 1981. Brian Ahern produced it, and it was drawn mostly from material left over from earlier sessions, recorded between 1978 and 1980, that had not fitted onto Emmylou Harris’s other albums. Recording is credited to Enactron Studios and mixing to Magnolia Sound.

Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt sing harmony on two songs, Robbie Robertson’s title song and “Mister Sandman,” a remake of a song from the sessions the three had done for their trio album. Waylon Jennings duets with Harris on “Spanish Johnny.” Rodney Crowell wrote “I Don’t Have to Crawl” and “Ashes by Now,” and the album also includes John Fogerty’s “Bad Moon Rising,” “How High the Moon,” James Taylor’s “Millworker” and the Gram Parsons and Chris Ethridge song “Hot Burrito #2.”

The musicians credited include Albert Lee (electric guitar, piano), Tony Rice (acoustic guitar, backing vocals), Ricky Skaggs (guitar, fiddle, mandolin, backing vocals), Jerry Douglas (dobro), Hal Blaine (drums) and James Burton (electric guitar). “Mister Sandman” was released as a single in February 1981 and reached the country top ten. Because neither Ronstadt’s nor Parton’s record company would allow their vocals to be used on the single, Harris re-recorded all three vocal parts for it. “I Don’t Have to Crawl” followed as the second single in May 1981.
