Favorites of Clint Howard, Doc Watson and the Blue Ridge Mountain Boys, released on Folkways in 1986, is a studio recreation and extension of the North Carolina string-band tradition that had produced Watson himself. Howard, an early musical associate of Watson's from the Boone, North Carolina area, grounds the album in the fiddle-and-banjo style that preceded bluegrass and fed into it. Watson's guitar playing — already canonical by 1986 — is here heard in a context closer to his old-time roots than his more celebrated flatpicking showcases, making this a useful document of the musical world from which he emerged. The album rewards listeners interested in the pre-bluegrass mountain string-band tradition.
